The sci-fi thriller DISTRICT 9, a sleeper hit this past
summer for Sony’s TriStar Pictures, has something more to celebrate this
morning with the announcement of the nominees for the 82nd annual Academy
Awards. The Peter Jackson-produced, docudrama-style saga of the bloody conflict
between humans and extraterrestrials they’ve segregated in South Africa landed
four nominations, including one of the 10 slots for Best Picture.
The movie is also up for Best Adapted Screenplay (written by
director Neill Blomkamp, expanding his short film ALIVE IN JOBERG, and Terri
Tatchell), Best Editing (Julian Clarke) and Best Visual Effects (Dan Kaufman,
Peter Muyzers, Robert Habros and Matt Aitken). We’re also happy to see Fango
fave Quentin Tarantino’s INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS grab eight noms (including Best
Picture, Director and Original Screenplay). The Oscars will be awarded Sunday,
March 7 at 8 p.m. EST/5 p.m. PST.
District 9 will be showing at the Cinema Arts Centre on Wednesday, February 17th at 7:00 PM and 9:00 PM. You can visit their website at
